There are certain foods that you shouldn’t give to your pets… under any circumstances. And yes, I know it’s hard sometimes, especially when they are sitting in front of you practically begging you for a taste of your food, but you have avoid the foods that’s on the list below. Remember, just because the food is delicious to you, doesn’t mean that your dog will like it as well.
Essentially at the end of the day, individual cases will vary based on breed, weight and some other factors, but in general, this list applies to all breeds and should be avoided in order to prevent accidents.
1. Coffee, Chocolate & Caffeine
So all of these products contain methylxanthines, which can be found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee and in the nuts of an extract used in some sodas. When this is digested by pets, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Also, remember that darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk, and white chocolate has the lowest level of methylxanthines. Baking chocolate contains the highest.
2. Macadamia Nuts
These are used a lot in cookies and candies, but they can cause some serious problems for your pets. They have caused weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia in dogs. That being said, the signs will usually only appear within 12 hours of ingestion and it can last up to 48 hours.
The whole avocado contains Persin, and this can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs specifically. Birds and rodents are very sensitive to avocado poisoning, and they can develop congestion, difficulty breathing and fluid accumulation around their hearts, to the point where this can be fatal to your pets.
