The story of this family and their dog is not uncommon, but 6-year-old Shane’s reaction was most certainly note-worthy. Especially since we tend to attribute wisdom to age, and generally discard children as beings who have yet the capacity to make sense.
But children can say the most glorious things, and Shane certainly did.
When Ron and Lisa (aka Shane’s parents) brought their 10-year-old dog,Belker, to the Vet they were told he has cancer. Even more gut wrenching for the 2 was that there was nothing they could do to save his life
The Vet suggested euthanasia. And so the couple took Belker home to allow their young son a chance to say goodbye, and the Vet performed the procedure there.
After Belker had died the family spoke of the passing, and that’s when Shane astounded his parents, and then the Internet, by telling them exactly why dogs live shorter lives.
“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” He said, “well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”
Shane’s thinking proved to be unique indeed. Not just for a 6-year-old, but for a human in general. His ability to cope with the concept of death, and look outside his grief to see something bigger is impressive to say the least.
